Little Back Pocket Guide informs about DoxyPEP

A fifth title in The Love Tank's Little Back Pocket Guide To launches today, providing information about the use of DoxyPEP to prevent STIs.

Use of DoxyPEP - using the antibiotic, doxycycline, after sex to prevent STIs - has become increasingly common in the UK, and is already prescribed for this use in some parts of the USA and Australia.

Dr Ben Weil, the Guide's author says: "As use of informal DoxyPEP increases, it's important to ensure that relevant, current, and accessible information about its use is available to people who are considering using it or who are already using it. Until a time when DoxyPEP becomes available more formally to people who might benefit from it, including through the NHS, we need to provide communities with information about the benefits and risks of using DoxyPEP, all within a harm reduction framework. This includes providing communities with measured and supportive information about antimicrobial resistance."

The Guide, available both online and as a limited edition printed booklet, is an edited version of The Love Tank's comprehensive online Doxy PEP resource.

The Guide is part of a bigger programme of collaborative work on DoxyPEP that The Love Tank is involved with including:

  • Participation as community consultants on UKHSA's STI strategy

  • Community research partners in new London based DoxyPEP research

  • Writing group of BASHH new DoxyPEP guidelines

The development and print of the Guide was supported by AMR Interrupted, a Wellcome Trust funded research project based at the University of Sussex.
